White frame. Ready to hang.
This tapestry is inspired by extensive Moroccan mosaic tile work (also known as ‘zillij’) that elaborately adorns the public courtyards within the Madrasa Bou Inania, in Fez, an important historic centre of learning. Calligraphy, stucco and tile work in the Madrasa is represented in stitched wool in this tapestry, which invites the viewer to contemplate the synonymous blending of two ancient handicrafts: mosaic tilework and stitched needlepoint. The warm colours seen in one section of the Madrasa are highlighted in this tapestry.
